There is an interesting background to the Cambodia gambling halls that lie just across the border from nearby Thailand, in which gambling den gaming is not allowed. Eight casinos are situated in a relatively small space in the metropolis of Poipet in Cambodia. This conclave of Cambodia gambling dens is in an excellent area, a three to 4 hour drive from Bangkok and Macao, the two largest wagering centers in Asia. Cambodia gambling dens do a huge business with Thai workers and travelers from Malaysia, Japan, South Korea, and Singapore, with only very few Westerners. The astonishing income gained from the casinos ranges from seven and a half million dollars to more than 12.5 million dollars, and there are a few restrictions requirements for casino ownership. Ownership is assumed to be largely Thai; however, investment sources are ambiguous. The borders are formally open from 09:00 to 1700, and even though visas are apparently required to pass, there are means around this, as is true of most border crossings.
The original Cambodia casinos premiered in Phnom Penh in 1994, but were forced to close in 1998, leaving just a single gambling hall in the capital, the Naga Resort. The Naga, an anchored bateau gambling hall, highlights 150 slots and sixty gaming tables. The Naga river boat is open all hours with 42 tables of mini-baccarat, 4 tables of vingt-et-un, ten of roulette, 2 of Caribbean Stud Poker, and one each of Pai-Gow and Tai-Sai.
The first casino in Poipet, the Holiday Palace, premiered in the late nineties and the Golden Crown before long followed. There are 150 slot machines and five table games at the Golden Crown and one hundred and four slots and sixty eight tables at the Holiday Palace. The latest Holiday Palace Casino and Resort highlights three hundred slots and seventy tables and the Princess Hotel and Casino, also in Poipet, has 166 slot machine games and 96 gaming tables, including eighty seven punto banco (the most dominant game), Fan Tan, and Pai Gow. Also, there is the Casino Tropicana, with 135 one armed bandits and sixty six of the common tables, as well as 1 table of Casino Stud Poker. Another one of the 8 casinos in Poipet, again in a motel, is the Princess Casino with 166 slot machines and 97 casino games. The Star Vegas Casino is part of an all-inclusive vacation and hotel compound that highlights a number of comforts on top of the gambling hall, which contains ten thousand square feet of one hundred and thirty slots and 88 gaming tables.
