There is a captivating background to the Cambodia casinos that sit just over the border from neighboring Thailand, in which gambling den gaming is illegal. Eight gambling dens are anchored in a relatively small location in the city of Poipet in Cambodia. This collection of Cambodia casinos is in a perfect destination, a 3 to four hour trip from Bangkok and Macao, the two most popular gambling centers in Asia. Cambodia casinos do a huge business with Thai blue-collar workers and tourists from Malaysia, Japan, South Korea, and Singapore, with only very few Westerners. The amazing income gained from the gambling dens ranges from 7.5 million dollars to more than 12.5 million dollars, and there are a number of controls requirements for casino ownership. Ownership is assumed to be mainly Thai; still, funding sources are ambiguous. The borders are officially open from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., and although visas are apparently required to cross, there are means around this, as is true of most border crossings.
The initial Cambodia gambling dens premiered in Phnom Penh in 1994, but were forced to close in 1998, leaving only a single gambling den in the capital, the Naga Resort. The Naga, a moored ship gambling den, contains one hundred and fifty slots and 60 tables. The Naga gambling hall never closes with forty two tables of mini-punto banco, 4 tables of 21, ten of roulette, 2 of Caribbean Stud Poker, and a single table each of Pai-Gow and Tai-Sai.
The first gambling hall in Poipet, the Holiday Palace, opened in the late nineties and the Golden Crown quickly followed. There are 150 slot machines and 5 tables at the Golden Crown and one hundred and four slots and sixty eight table games at the Holiday Palace. The newer Holiday Palace Casino and Resort features three hundred slot machines and seventy tables and the Princess Hotel and Casino, also in Poipet, has 166 slots and 96 table games, including 87 punto banco (the most dominant game), Fan Tan, and Pai Gow. Also, there is the Casino Tropicana, with 135 slot machine games and 66 of the normal tables, as well as one table of Casino Stud Poker. Another one of the 8 gambling dens in Poipet, also in a motel, is the Princess Casino with one hundred and sixty six slot machines and 97 games. The Star Vegas Casino is part of a multinational vacation and hotel complex that highlights a number of comforts in addition to the gambling den, which has 10,000 sq.ft. of 130 one armed bandits and 88 table games.
